“UNM doctors study brains of Lobo Athletes” KOAT CHANNEL 7 NEWS
KOAT Channel 7 News in Albuquerque, New Mexico recently interviewed Dr. Kiehl regarding his newest project; Brain Safe. The Brain Safe program addresses the growing concerns about sport-related concussions in an innovative, proactive fashion by performing thorough cognitive and behavioral assessments and brain imaging sequences of each athlete prior to the start of the season. This program has a contract with University of New Mexico where their doctors are studying the effects of contact sports on the brain. UNM doctors recently scanned the brains of 253 Lobos who participate in a contact sport. After the screening, the athletes meet with Dr. Kent Kiehl, who created the Brain Safe Project. Since the research started 10 months ago, 11 players have been evaluated by the Kiehl lab for concussions. READ MORE
